I watch first. Then I make the picture.
I am Vica White. My full name is Victoria, but I go by Vica. I am a visual artist and photographer, based around Newport and Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island.
I grew up feeling unseen and unheard. I learned to observe more than I spoke, and that habit became the way I work. I notice the light before the person, and the pause before the smile.
My background is in art and visual technology, and I have spent years working professionally in photography, design and other creative fields. For a time I was a photographer aboard the Queen Mary 2, travelling around the world. It shaped my perspective more than anything else has.
I am drawn to beautiful places, interesting people, architecture, landscapes, and moments that would otherwise go unnoticed. My work combines fine-art landscapes, travel photography and portraiture. I care about natural light, atmosphere, composition and authentic human expression.
I also photograph animals and pets. The dogs and polo horses on the Animals page were mostly made along the Rhode Island coast.
Private clients live with my prints in their homes, and some of them hang at University Orthopedics, 34 Valley Road, Middletown. One day I hope to see them in hotels, in public spaces and in commercial interiors.
I am not trying to photograph everything. I want an intentional practice, a recognizable artistic identity, and the people who appreciate how I see. I want the freedom to travel, explore, connect and make work that means something.
“I wanted to create space, for connection, for conversation, for feeling.”
